This is mid-bachelorette party, if that gives you a sense for how hardcore I am.

Hi.

Welcome to my world of books.

"Look Alive Out There" by Sloane Crosley

lookalive.jpg

The basics: Non-fiction essays, largely autobiographical - some about particularly bizarre situations Crosley has found herself in, some observations of the ridiculousness of life, and many surprisingly beautiful insights along the way.

Read if you’re into: Sardonic women; New York City; laughing at awkward times; laughing in general; Rachel Maddow

Avoid if: Many have named white privilege that leaks through the pages; while I agree, I do think Crosley writes from a self-deprecating perspective, aware of her own limited view.

Favorite excerpt:

One guy was forever sniffing out my DNA-hustling agenda. He shoehorned the topic into conversations about guacamole. You ever try to put toothpicks through an avocado pit? If only that’s how babies were made! His lack of verbal agility hit rock bottom as we lay on the beach one summer, chatting with our chins resting on our fists. I asked him if my back was getting red and he asked me what I would do if I got pregnant.

“What are you going to do if you go bald?” I shot back.

“That’s totally different,” he said.

“Biologically,” I agreed, “not topically.”

If you liked this, try: David Sedaris; Nora Ephron (try I Feel Bad About My Neck); Rebecca Solnit (so they tell me; I have yet to read her but she’s on my list)

"Thank You for Being Late," by Thomas Friedman
